Civil partnerships
If you are about to enter into a civil partnership, call Cleaver Thompson Solicitors in Alfreton and Clay Cross.
A legal relationship
A civil partnership is a legal relationship between individuals and grants similar rights to married couples. Make sure you have all the facts by contacting us for more information and guidance.
LEGALLY BINDING AGREEMENT
A civil partnership is legally binding and is formed when two people are registered as civil partners. It continues until annulment, dissolution, or the death of one or both partners. Both partners must be 18 years old or more, and resided in the same place for at least 7 days in England or Wales. Neither partner should already be married or already in a civil partnership, or closely related.
Convert into a marriage
If you are in a same-sex couple, your civil partnership can be converted into a marriage if you live in England or Wales. If you want to live in Scotland, Northern Ireland or outside the UK, then different rules apply. If you want legal recognition for your partnership that provides the same legal protections as marriage (but you don’t want to get married) then a civil partnership could be the ideal solution.
Ending a civil partnership
If you wish to apply to the court to end a civil partnership (called dissolving a civil partnership), then certain rules apply:
-
You must have been in a civil partnership for at least a year
-
You are not free to enter into another civil partnership until the dissolution process is complete
-
A statement from one of the partners is needed that confirms the relationship is irrevocably broken.
